When To Look For Digital Camera Repairs

Digital cameras are a big improvement over regular film types, and they're also extremely useful.  However, these cameras, like every other device, can have problems.  If something goes wrong with your camera, you'll need know your options for having it repaired.  Too many people choose to spend a lot on a new camera when fixing their old one would have been relatively simple.

Common problems include the failure of the zoom lens.  This often happens when the lens is out of alignment.  You may find that the camera isn't focusing, or that the LCD shows an error message.  Other things that could go wrong include damage to the LCD screen, broken doors on battery cases and memory card slots, and damaged contacts where the memory card is meant to sit.  Sometimes sensors go bad, too.

Before you send a digital camera in to be repaired, you should check a few things.  If the batteries are very low, for instance, you may have problems that can be fixed by changing them.  Make sure your settings are correct, and that the memory card has space on it. 

Take batteries out for twenty-four hours to reset the camera entirely, and make sure there are no setting changes that are really the cause of your problems.  Digital camera repair can be expensive, and no on wants to pay for it if they don't have to.

If none of these fix the problem, it's time to decide who to call.  When your camera is under warranty, you should take it to an authorized repair center for your brand.  That means that Sony cameras should go to a service center that's been authorized by Sony, and Olympus cameras should go to someone who's authorized to repair them by the manufacturer. 

Describe your problem accurately, and find out what the costs are likely to be, as well as how long your camera will be away while it's being fixed.  Cameras that are not under warranty may be able to be repaired locally by a non-authorized repair shop.  This can cost less, but is also a little riskier.

Be sure to check service advisories from the manufacturer, too.  Sometimes, what's gone wrong with your camera is actually a factory defect, and you might be able to get it fixed for free.  It's even possible to be sent a whole new digital camera in some cases.  Before starting digital camera repairs, take a look to find out if an advisory is out for your model, and which steps should be taken.  After all, repairs usually cost a third to half of what you paid for your camera to start with - if you can have them done for free, you should!
